How To: Sparkle Hair Texture
In this tutorial the most important part is the noise layer. The noise will make the sparkles.
I will be using this texture from "Hair Texture Pack 1" in my 2009-2011 freebie set. Download link in the first post.
Step 1.)
Create a new transparent 256x256 image. Fill it with black or grey.
*The darker the grey the more the sparkles stick out. The lighter the grey the more they will blend in with the texture.
Step 2.)
Add noise. The more noise you add the more sparkles will show on the hair.
Step 3.)
Greyscale the noise. If you do not use grey scale the sparkles will show up as rainbow dots. If you want rainbow dots then do not greyscale.
Step 4.)
Open the hair texture you want to add the sparkles to. A flat hair texture is easiest but layered will also work.
Step 5.)
Copy the greyscale noise and add it to the hair texture as a new layer. Make sure to rename the layers so you know which layer is the hair texture and which layer is the noise.
Step 6.)
Duplicated the hair layer and place it above the noise layer. Turn it off for now until we need it.
Step 7.)
Set the noise layer to "Dodge" and set the transparency to 35%.
By now you should be seeing the "sparkles". Sharpen the noise layer to make the sparkles stand out more. Different layer settings work with different textures so you do not have to use dodge.
Step 8.)
Turn the other hair layer back on. Give it a color you like. In this example I chose pink.
Step 9.)
Set the second hair layer (the one you just colored) to "Lighten". You now have your sparkle hair texture.
Feel free to play with it. Duplicate different layers and play with the layer settings for the noise. The noise effect will be different for different textures. This tutorial is to show you how to use the noise to create the effect. You can use this to also make sparkly nails or add sparkles to shoes. The sharper the sparkles are the more of a "bling" effect they will have when on a product. Don't be afraid to duplicate the noise layer or have very little noise on the grey texture.
Here are some examples I made:
.
*Note: the hair textures above are from my 2009-2011 freebie pack. The download link is in the first post.
All rules apply to all images shown in this post.

How To: Add Tips to Your Hair Texture.
How To: Add Tips To Your Hair Texture.
In this tutorial you will learn a very quick and simple way to add tips to your hair textures.
Texture I will use:
Step 1.)
Choose the hair texture you would like to add the tip to. Flat textures are easiest but layered will also be fine.
Step 2.)
Create a new layer and name it "colored tip". Choose a shade of grey and fill in the new layer.
Step 3.)
Select the eraser tool. Erase the grey until it is about the size you want for your tip. In this example I erased about 2/3 of the grey layer.
Step 4.)
Change the eraser tools shape to circle and resize it to 4. Use the eraser tool to create lines in the grey layer.
Only go half way unless you what spaces between the tips.
Step 5.)
Repeat step 4. Use different sized circles. The smaller the circle and the more lines you erase in the the grey the thicker the tip will look.
*This also works when drawing hair textures.
Step 6.)
When you are done drawing the tips you will them motion blur them. Make sure the angle is vertical and not side to side.
The intensity of the motion blur is to your own preference.
Step 7.)
End result of motion blurring the grey layer. You now have your tip. We made it grey so it is easy to recolor.
The lighter the grey the lighter the color will be when you recolor it.
Step 8.)
Here I will use "gamma correction" to make the tip black. I am now done making my hair texture tip.
Finished Product:
*This texture is a freebie from my "2009-early 2011" freebie texture pack. Download in the first post.
*All rules apply to this texture.
Feel free to play with the eraser size and shape when making the lines.
Make your tip unique! Also try using layer settings like "burn" and "color" or "hue".
Layer settings like "hue" and "color" are very important when you are making colorful tips.
The tips will look like they are really part of the texture when using layer settings.
